Stalking is a term used to describe a set of behaviors that has been exhibited by individuals for thousands of years. While all states have had laws about assault and harassment for some time, the first law prohibiting stalking was not enacted until 1990. California was the first state to make acts of stalking illegal. This law was passed in response to some high profile stalking cases that eventually resulted in the victim's murder. Today, every state has a stalking law which prohibits individuals from engaging in a course of conduct directed at a specific person that causes them to reasonably feel fear or duress.

The specific definition of stalking can vary from state to state. Many states define stalking specifically as: the willful, malicious, or repeated following or harassing of another individual, causing them fear for their safety or wellbeing, or that of their immediate family. The crime of stalking can be considered a misdemeanor or a felony offense depending on the state laws and specifics of the case.

Slander is defined as the act of making false and injurious statements that do injury to a person's reputation. Both slander and libel are forms of defamation. Slander is defamation that is spoken, while libel is defamation that is written. Slander can include any false statement which does injury to a person's business or personal reputation and can relate to the person's character, morals, ability, business practices, or financial status. The victim of slander has the legal right file a civil lawsuit against the person who committed the slander to seek compensation for their damages.

Inchoate Crime, Attempt is the inchoate crime closest to actually carrying out the crime itself, while solicitation is the furthest removed. Attempt using involves trying to commit a crime but failing to complete the intended actions. Threats and challenges may also qualify as attempt.

Conspiracy involves agreeing to commit a crime. This crime can be charged in addition to the crime itself. For example, you can be charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Conspiracy is a favorite prosecutorial weapon because it is relatively easy to obtain a conviction for conspiracy. It is important to have a strong defense in order to fight allegations of conspiracy.

Solicitation is the crime of asking another party to commit a crime. Even if the solicited party does not commit the crime, the asking party may be charged with solicitation. For example, a person who offers a bribe to a public official may be charged with solicitation even if the official did not accept the bribe.

Being an accessory or accomplice to a crime is similar to inchoate crimes because they do not involve the actual commission of the crime. Both accessory and accomplice involve knowingly and intentionally helping to facilitate the success of a crime. The person who actually commits a crime is called the principle. Those who help are called accomplices. For example the person with the gun to a teller's head collecting cash in a bank robbery is the principle; the getaway car driver, lookout person, and other helpers are the accomplices. An accessory may help a principle or accomplices before or after a crime. For example, the person who knowingly shelters criminal offenders after the crime, to help them escape arrest, is an accessory after the fact.

Embezzlement, The wrongful use of the property of another person for one's own benefit may be considered embezzlement if the property in question has been legally entrusted by the owner to the person who is misusing it. Although most charges of embezzlement are levied against persons who are employees of a company or individual, acts of Congress classify as embezzlement the stealing of letters and other mail by postmasters, clerks, and letter carriers. Embezzlement is a serious charge; in most states it is considered a felony offense. The potential punishments for an embezzlement conviction include prison time and significant fines.

There are many different types of embezzlement, but around 80% of cases involve the misappropriation of assets, including inventory and supplies. Most commonly, persons accused of embezzlement are being investigated in relation to missing cash, either on hand or from business bank accounts. Embezzlement charges may be levied against almost anyone who has access to these accounts or cash on hand (such as petty cash), and a charge of embezzlement can be almost as damaging as a conviction.

As previously mentioned, there can be strict consequences for a person convicted of embezzlement. These may include any combination of imprisonment, probation or parole, loss of the right to be bonded, restitution to be paid to the victims of embezzlement, court-ordered counseling, and large fines. Sentencing for embezzlement may take into account any prior convictions, attitude of the community towards crimes such as embezzlement, degree of media attention on the case, and mitigating circumstances.

An accomplice is an individual who participates in the commission of a crime knowingly, willingly, and with common interest. An accomplice is one who intentionally aids in the commission of a crime whether or not they physically commit the act itself. An accomplice can be charged with the same crime as the principle actor who carries out the offense. In the eyes of the law, helping someone in the commission of a crime makes one just as guilty as the criminal themselves.

A misdemeanor is a criminal charge that is less serious than a gross misdemeanor or a felony. A misdemeanor is typically a crime that is punishable by less than one year of incarceration and a certain maximum fine. Some crimes can be considered a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the specific facts of a case. In some criminal cases, a person charged with a felony offense will be charged with additional misdemeanor charges as part of the prosecution's statutory scheme. A criminal defense may also succeed in reducing charges from a felony to a misdemeanor offense, which can be very advantageous to a defendant.

Some examples of misdemeanor offenses include certain traffic violations, property theft at a value lower than a specific amount, trespassing, disorderly conduct, possession of a controlled substance, and more. Each state has passed specific laws which apply to the classification of criminal offenses. Many states also have a system which classifies misdemeanor offenses based on severity.

A felony crime is more serious and is punishable by more than one year of prison or even death. The criminal process for felony offense cases differs from the process employed for misdemeanor crimes. In a misdemeanor case, the prosecution will not often convene a grand jury to indict the defendant. In many jurisdictions, individuals who face misdemeanor charges are not granted the right to a court appointed lawyer as they are in felony cases. Though the potential punishment is less serious than for a felony, a misdemeanor is a criminal offense and one charged with this offense will greatly benefit from professional legal help to protect their legal rights and options.

A person who is charged with a misdemeanor will face a criminal trial by judge or jury to determine their guilt or innocence. In many jurisdictions, misdemeanor cases are handled in special courts that use abbreviated procedures. A defendant will often have to request and pay for a jury trial, if they seek this legal option in a misdemeanor case. If convicted, a judge will usually have broad discretion in determining the sentence, or penalty, imposed. In cases of misdemeanor traffic violations, the court will typically have a pre-determined fee schedule that will determine the penalty for their crime.

penalties. The additional penalties for a misdemeanor will often depend on the type of offense that was committed. For some misdemeanor convictions, a person's driving privileges may be revoked for months and even years. Some people convicted of a misdemeanor may lose the right to possess a firearm, or may have a concealed weapon permit permanently revoked. A misdemeanor conviction may also be grounds for employment termination and may preclude a person from obtaining a professional license and similar credentials and opportunities.

A hate crime is any malicious act committed against a property, group or person because of a bias against a particular religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, nationality, or disability. Hate crimes are often acts of force or threats of force upon a particular group because the offender disagrees or does not understand the group's affiliation.

While a number of different factors may motivate people to commit hate crimes, certain groups are more frequently the victims. Motivations for hate crime offenders are typically racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, or religious based. Following the enactment of the 1990 Hate Crime Statistics Act by the federal government,
